North, South, East, and West
The images for North, South, East and West were made over several years and the final portfolio was selected and printed in 2004. It is impossible to present the totality of what is “landscape” in the United States. So, I chose localities near each directional border of the country. I photographed in California (Point Lobos and Pebble Beach), South Dakota (Badlands and Black Forest area), Montana (Glacier National Park), Florida (Tosohatchee Reserve and Merritt Island) and Maryland (Western Maryland at Sandy Hook and Antietam). Each of these places is very different and presented different photographic challenges. It took me three years to make the trips necessary to create these images, traveling by van and long distance train in order to accommodate my photographic equipment. The images in the portfolio are printed on Ilford Multigrade IV gelatin silver paper and are dual toned with selenium to hold blacks and sepia to just slightly tint the highlights.
